As we approach holiday time, often with friends and family around, this article on Gratitude was sent to me by my sister, Kim, and I wanted to share it with you.
Much has been written on the power of Gratitude and to some it may sound corny or overdone. I share this because there are very few things in the world of wholistic health which include emotional wellbeing and mental health that are “easy“ to do and have such impact on your mindset being bent towards feeling engaged and positive. A lot comes at us daily that can disrupt or shake up the mind and bend it towards seeing the negative in things. We also have past events in our lives and worry about the future that create negative/defensive type mindsets – somewhat a survival skill. I am not a professional, instead speaking from shared observations and shared experiences.
One of my close friends is battling cancer and all the difficult physical and mental challenges with it. I had asked him one day how he gets up each day and continues to keep a positive attitude and march forward tackling these serious issues he has to deal with. His answer amazed me. He said when he gets up and a thought comes to him that is worrisome or negative, he tells himself, “not today”, today he is here and will be in the very moment he is in and won’t allow the negative thoughts to take over. He says, “not today”!!! I have used “not today” ever since.
When bad things come across your mind, and/or you feel lonely or sad, tell yourself “not today” and let gratitude take over. It is a quick way to get your mind on a better thought path. I have learned you can train your mind over time to default to thought patterns that are more emotionally healthy. It takes time and repetition, which is a practice like training physically. Gratitude is a quick way to shift the mind set and I encourage all to try it. This article gives some steps to have a “practice“ which I think are simple and impactful. I am grateful for my sister for sharing and appreciate her each day for being my sister and business partner for over three decades.
Here is to holidays filled with Gratitude and being in all the moments!
Take good care and be well.
Joe
